Remodeling a kitchen in a residential home is a challenging task as there are many aspects that will need to be considered. One of the main features that is typically updated in any kitchen are the cabinets. The cabinets consist of the base units and the upper units. Installing the cabinets requires following steps to ensure the task is done the correct way.

The cabinets to install in a kitchen can be a DIY project or a task to be done by a professional. You will be able to determine which option to pursue based on the type of cabinets and the work involved. Most homeowners who are handy with DIY projects may choose to install the cabinet shells and hire cabinet installers or a finish carpenter to complete the installation of the doors, drawers, and trim pieces.

Completing any cabinet installation when remodeling a kitchen requires basic DIY skills and using the proper tools. If you are unsure about the tools that will be needed, then visit a home improvement store or research online. The key point to remember about installing any cabinetry is to ensure you have the base units and upper units level and plumb. If the units are not level and plumb, then the drawers or the doors may not shut properly. New appliances may also not fit correctly. One aspect to keep in mind for any cabinet installation is to have a helper available.

Remodeling a kitchen is a multiple-step process. You will need to have the rough wiring and plumbing completed before installing any cabinetry. This will prevent any need to address problems which could occur at a later time. However, the base cabinets need to be put in place before finishing the main floor in the kitchen. The goal is to prevent waste when the flooring is being installed.

Proper demolition is needed when remodeling the kitchen or a residential home. This means taking the proper care and effort to carefully remove the old cabinets. The goal is to limit any damage to the walls to prevent any unnecessary repairs. Another thing to keep in mind is the walls need to be measured for the new cabinets.

Securing the cabinets to the existing walls will be done using nails or screws. If there are any screws or nails in the walls after taking off the old cabinets, then they need to be removed. Check to make ensure all the parts and pieces of the cabinets are present before starting the installation process. Many cabinet units will come disassembled from the manufacturer. The base cabinets need to be set into place on the floor and against the wall. You may need to use shims to level the units on the floor.

Securing the cabinets to the walls requires using screws with a power drill. The power drill will need to be used to drive the screws into the back of the cabinets and into the wall studs. Place the other units of the cabinets together and secure them to the wall.

How to Design a Mediterranean Style Garden Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:07:26 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

No matter where you live you can create a Mediterranean-style garden in your back yard. With one of these gardens you can feel like you’re relaxing in the Mediterranean whenever you step out of your door. Here are some ideas and tips to help you create a stunning garden that you and your friends and family can enjoy.

Make Use of Clean Lines

Clean lines are going to be really distinct and stark. You want to have obvious divisions and you don’t want any sections of your garden to blend into other sections. Your walkways and patio should be very bright. Tiles or stone are great ways to create lines and borders. You want to be able to see the lines where your walkways end and transition. This creates a very contemporary feel and really captures the style of the Mediterranean.

A Courtyard Feel

Mediterranean homes traditionally have courtyards. You don’t actually need a courtyard to create a courtyard feel though. You can create this feel very simply by having more than one seating area. You’ll have seating on your patio, but you may also want a tiled area a few steps down as well. Seating at different levels like this is a great idea.

Choosing Plants

The plants in your Mediterranean garden are extremely important. You want strong lines to be visible and you also want strong plants that are well visible. Start with large, tall plants to begin creating a very busy feel. Tall plants also create a luxurious feel as well. Look for various evergreens that are different shades of green.

After selecting and placing your larger plants you want to fill in areas using smaller plants as well as potted plants. You want lots of potted plants on your patio and other sitting areas. The plants should be in tiled pots for the most authentic Mediterranean look. Choose both pots and plants of different sizes and incorporate a lot of different colors as well. Contrasting colors are great.

Some good plants and trees for a Mediterranean-style garden are olive and cypress trees, tall ornamental grasses, succulents and herbs like lavender and rosemary. Fragrant herbs can be used in your kitchen, but if you let them grow they also provide ground cover and other unique properties to your garden. Combine plants with green foliage with plants that have blue-green foliage. You also want a few blooming plants that have bright flowers in purples and yellows.

Incorporate Rustic Textures

Along with tiles and stone you may also want to consider some other textures as well, but ideally you should steer clear of wood. Have some gravel garden areas and incorporate some limestone as well as terracotta. Rustic, metal chairs are good for your seating areas. Glass-top tables with nice, frosted glass are good as places to sit your beverages and snacks. You can also incorporate water fixtures and fountains. You want these fixtures to be authentic stone. Again, limestone is great. Choose a limestone color that contrasts with other nearby colors.

How to Style the Country Cottage Look Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:08:16 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

Country cottage living equates to breathing in the fragrant air, relishing the soothing sounds of waterfalls ans listening to birds chirping to their mates. Creating this part of heaven is not that hard if you follow some useful tips.

Designing Front Path

First impressions are lasting impressions, so it is important to add a welcoming entrance to the country cottage you are about to style. Depending on the architecture of the cottage, the front entrance can become the significant feature by itself, especially if the cottage is well defined. Whether the entrance comprises of sidewalk, porch, or street, the front path should be made of formal materials such as gravel or wood chips that are better suited to the more private areas of the property. The path can be softened with low growing shrubs, annuals and perennials to draw attention. When choosing plants avoid thorny shrubs, roses and those that have spooky appearance. The door of the entrance should suit the style as well.

Maintaining Character Features

Character is an important part of a country cottage design, since it is the character that will be visible at first sight. Well-chosen and beautifully designed furniture, doors and windows lend grace to the cottage that may be useful in defining particular style or era and creating focal points. These features can also add depth and a sense of perspective to the space. Many characters that are considered classical today originated over hundreds of years. Preserving them is one of the ways to style a country cottage. Opt for simple wooden furniture or the ones that have rustic look that give a sense of dated decor. Colorful cushions and throws can be accented by flower pots to lend a cheerful air to indoor rooms.

Painting the Rooms

Painting is another area to look into while designing a country style cottage. Walls for a country cottage don’t have to cost a fortune. Without changing the expensive and natural features of the space, you can dress up the rooms and make it relaxing. Flashier techniques such as stenciling create decor based on country themes. Where you want restful activities you can color the walls with a subdued or neutral tone. Finish up by painting the wall surface with glaze or sandpaper. The existing furniture can also be painted for crackle look that mimic antiques.

Attention to Details

Heavy curtains don’t go well with country style. The same rule applies for decorating fireplace with modern accessories. Note that whatever type of style you desire, there are bulbs to enhance the design, so make sure to use them well.

Finally, designing a country cottage is all about your wishes and dreams for the limited space and then bringing them down to what you can really accomplish with your time, money and space. Take some time to review the style and be sure to address each and every details. Try to coordinate the materials used with the materials that form the structure. Make sure the design naturally blend with the house and its environment.

How To Organize Your Linens In Your Bedroom Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:08:55 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

There are multiple ways to organize a linen closet. Begin by thinking about what you are trying to accomplish with the organization of the space. The most common reasons to organize are to easily find items, access them fast and to make the space look more clean and pulled together. The key to organizing a linen closet is to keep the the linens together in sets. Create a folding technique that you can use on all the linens in the closet. Fold all the linen sets the same way to keep a uniform size and shape of each set. By having a uniform folding method, the sets will fit better into the space and have a cleaner, more unified look. You can organize the linens by style, type, color, size, room, etc. I prefer to organize by size (small to large) and color (light to dark). No one likes to be searching for a twin cotton set only to find it, after ripping out most of the other linen closet items, hidden under the king flannel set. Organization is a universal task and is often done from smallest to largest, top to bottom, and/or left to right. By separating out sizes, you will be less likely to lose a set that is hidden under a larger one. You may want to allocate one shelf per size, type of linen or the room which it belongs too. Separating sets by color allows you to easily find the set you are looking for, for a specific room. I prefer to color code them from light to dark. In addition to being able to locate the preferred linen set faster, a color coded closet would be aesthetically pleasing to the eye and does not create a chaotic feel if a guest were to look in the closet.

Organization does not stop with the linen items. You can take it a step further and label the shelves, using a sharpie marker, with the size or type of linen. I actually like to put a piece of scotch take on the front edge of the shelf and then write the size or type on the tape. By placing the tape down first, I can easily rename the shelf if needed or take off the tape, if it is no longer relevant. Labeling the selves is helpful if someone, besides yourself, is going to put away a set or take one out to use. No one will organize the same way you do, but having items labeled will help! You could label each shelf by size, room or linen type.

Organization will help so you do not have to pull out multiple sets to find the correct size, resulting in a more proficiently run household!

Once you create an organization method, the same core principals can be used in other areas of your home. Consistency from room to room and space to space will be the most effective way to create and keep the organization.

How To Steam Clean A Carpet Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:10:31 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

Dirty carpet is an unavoidable part of having carpeting, especially if a person has children or pets. Carpet can be noticeably dirty, with stains and spots, or it can also be evenly dirty, where is has gradually collected things like dust and pet hair and dirt. Either way, the good news is that the carpet does not have to stay that way, and the key to maintaining freshly key carpets is by steam cleaning. Steam cleaning a carpet may sound like a difficult undertaking, but by following only a few simple steps, steam cleaning like a professional is easy.
The first thing to do after deciding to try out the task of steam cleaning a carpet is to acquire a steam cleaning machine. These can be purchased or rented from home improvement and cleaning companies. The next step is to pre-spray the carpet that is going to be treated. This is done by using the hand held sprayer attachment of the steam cleaning machine to release the first chemical needed in the steam cleaning process. The chemical needs to be sprayed as evenly as possible on the area that is going to be cleaned. It is not dangerous for children and pets; as long as an adult is handling the chemicals and machine the entire steam cleaning chore is a safe process. The first spray is used to loosen the dirt and grime in the carpet prior to using the steam cleaner.
The next step involves the big, noisy machine. After turning it on, take the steam vacuum attachment and run it over the areas of carpeting that have been sprayed with the first chemical. This vacuum releases the second chemical that is used for steam cleaning and it is after this step that one begins to notice the difference in the carpet. It is important not to leave the carpet too wet, or the drying process will last longer and there will be the potential for mold build up underneath the carpeting. After moving over the carpet several times with the second chemical it is time to move on. The vacuum removes the unwanted dirt, dust, allergens, animal hair, and bacteria from the carpet.
While the carpet will already look better at this point, the carpet will be noticeably cleaner after it dries. It will take several hours to dry completely on how wet it was after the cleaning process. It needs to be completely dry before furniture can be put back and it can be walked across. The steam cleaner removes the dirt from deep within the carpet, which is why it is the perfect method to not only clean dirty spots, but to also clean a more evenly dirty carpet that is not always noticeable. It is important to wait until the carpet is dry to fully see the different that steam cleaning a carpet makes. It is easy to steam clean a carpet at home, and the results leave the house looking and feeling clean and fresh.

How to Organize Your Home Office Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:11:10 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

It has often been said that proper organization is the key to many successful ventures, whether they are personal or business related. A disorganized space can result in confusion and maybe even a certain level of chaos. It is becoming an increasingly popular decision to work from home, but even if it wasn’t about your means of employment, it is a good idea to set apart an area for taking care of paying those dreaded monthly bills. There are instances where residents can set aside an entire room for that home office, on the other hand, integrating your office within another room has also been an option. In either case, proper organization will be the key.

Although it is not essential to be effective, if you can separate the home office into a room away from the rest of the house you can expect things to be a lot more organized. This is especially significant if there is a family involved, or you are using this space as a way to earn an income. It is also important when there is a need to avoid distractions in order to perform your responsibilities. With an individual room, it will be easier to avoid turning yourself into a workaholic and help you define the difference between home and work.

Focus On Productivity

One of the biggest problems that people working from home have run into is the family factor. With a desk or assigned space in close proximity to your family life, it is easy to see how items like dishes, clothes and other personal items could end up laying around on your desk. Avoid using the desk in your home office as a dumping ground, in fact, it is in your best interest to walk away from the office at meal times or anything else related to your family life.

Tools Of The Trade

It is impossible to perform your responsibilities effectively if the space you are operating from is cluttered. It is just as important to maintain organized desk drawers as it is to avoid unnecessary clutter on the surface where you will be working. You should maintain the same accessories in your home office as you would if you were working in an office environment. These tools might vary slightly depending on your profession, but they should include the basics like a stapler, letter opener and an area to differentiate your in and out activities. Keep your office supplies separate from the things you use at home.

This can be a tricky area, especially if space and finances are limited. A desk and office chair will be necessary; however, the need and size of your filing cabinets will be based on your job requirements. It is important to separate your individual filing from the information you keep for work, even if it is just by a drawer. Most home offices will use a home computer, at the same time, try to avoid sharing this computer for your own stuff. If you own an extra laptop or tablet, use that device for your personal browsing time and do this from another area in the home.

How To Know How Much Water Your Plants Are Getting Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:11:53 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

Your plants need a specific amount of water, but it’s often difficult to tell how much water they are being given, especially if they are getting rainwater in addition to what you give them. Additionally, irrigation systems can provide water on a regular basis, but is it enough for your plants? Knowing the precise amount of water that your plants are receiving is vital to their survival.

These water requirements are often given in terms of rainfall, that is, an amount in inches of rainfall per period of time. For instance, Kentucky Bluegrass, a popular lawn grass, requires 1 3/4″ of water per week in order to maintain healthy growth with no drying out. Placing a simple rain gauge on the lawn will help you decide how you should adjust your irrigation system’s watering schedule to maintain the lawn’s water need. Use a standard gauge bought at most home improvement stores, as the diameter of the gauge affects the reading (there is a difference in volume between an inch of rain into a test tube and an inch of rain into a bucket, for instance). Make sure the gauge is placed in an open location where the lawn receives the most irrigation, so as to prevent overwatering. Take your measurement at the end of each watering session–the water will evaporate out of the rain gauge, and so a single reading at the end of the week will not be as accurate as a reading taken after each watering session. If it rains, measure the amount of rainfall once the rain stops and assess how you will have to adjust your watering schedule.

In addition, if you are watering your plants by hand, such as in a garden setting, a rain gauge can also be useful. Make sure that the gauge is placed in a location where drippings from other plants will not result in an inaccurate reading, and water the rain gauge along with the rest of the plants to maintain consistency. You may have to place multiple gauges if you have plants with greatly varying water needs. Research how much water per unit of time your plant requires and mark this on the rain gauge nearest the plant. If your plant requires an inch of water per week, divide this up into seven days (this may be easier if you find metric requirements and a metric rain gauge) and water the plant this much each day. Continually filling the rain gauge until the water requirement is reached at the end of the week may not be accurate, depending on how much water evaporates during the day where you live. The most accurate reading will be taken once the water settles in the rain gauge, and no later. If it rains during the week, adjust your watering schedule and amount to avoid overwatering your plants.

By using a rain gauge and following these watering techniques, you will be able to meet your plants’ watering needs without too much guesswork, and they will flourish and thrive.

How To Stake Perennials That Have Fallen In Your GardenHow To Stake Perennials That Have Fallen In Your Garden Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:12:48 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

Staking should be a part of regular perennial care that will add stability to your plants and support the stems. Sometimes, because of over-fertilizing, stems can become weak. Perennials that love sun tend to seek sunlight by stretching and stalking can add some structure to their growth. Staking can be preventive or remedial. Perennials can fall over because of a number of factors like weather interference, animals, summer downpours and high winds. You can use branched twigs, stakes, plant ties and twine to bring back fallen over perennials. Interesting staking tools like tomato cages, grids and grow-through can also be used.

Normally, if perennials are grown with stronger plants, they would not need staking but if your perennials have fallen in spite of this, you can use the following points for staking –

• Tomato Cages – Tomato cages are not only good for your tomatoes but, in your garden, they can also serve the purpose of remedial staking. For bushy and tall plants that have fallen over or even midrange perennials, a tomato cage can become a ‘grow through’ which can be used with a twine for supporting fallen plants. You can also make use of bolt cutters for creating supports from inexpensive and easily available tomato cages.

• Twine and Bamboo – Twine and bamboo can be combined for creating ready to use and custom made stakes for fallen over perennials. Make sure that the stakes are nicely lodged inside the ground and are anchored properly. Also ensure that the strings are tight but not overly so because you want the plants weak stems to be supported. Bamboo stakes tend to rot over time, so remove them when winter approaches.

• Chicken Wire – Chicken wire can be used with bamboo stake for floppy perennials. The stakes will help to anchor your support system into the soil. This method of staking can especially be useful for perennials that are bushy with thin stems. It would also protect plants from animals like rabbits.

• Grid – Circular and flat grids can be used for staking. They have many legs which makes it easy to push them firmly into the soil and over weak perennials that need support. The stems can easily grow throw the mesh of wires in the grid. This method is ideal for monkshood, sea holly, garden phlox, peony and similar perennials that have the habit of forming clumps.

• Grow-Through – These support systems have concentric circles within them and these circles allow steps to grow through. Helenium, bugbane, blanket flower and balloon flower are some plants that grow best with this kind of staking.

• Linking – You can use wire links for upright perennials like Shasta daisy, ladybells, pincushion flowers and crocosmia that tend to fall over or lean on the path. Link them together and they will not overtake other plants with their foliage.

• Single Stake – Single stakes with a twine are perfect for long stemmed plants. They are easily available at most garden centers.

Plants that normally require staking are peony, helenium, goldenrod, gayfeather, foxglove, delphinium, centranthus, boltonia, balloon flower and aster.

Top 5 Tips for a Vintage Inspired Living Room Mon, 04 Jan 2016 07:13:56 +0000 SaigonHousesadmin

Vintage living rooms are something that many are envious of today. If you are a lover of all things vintage, you may find yourself dreaming of beautiful, retro living rooms similar to Lucille Ball’s or Laura Petrie’s. While this style may seem difficult to achieve, it is actually quite easy. Purchasing items from craft stores, antique shops, and thrift stores are much less expensive than shopping at high end furniture and home decor stores. You may even find that you have a few vintage items in your home or a relative’s home that you could use in your vintage inspired living room.

Lace curtains are one of the easiest ways to add vintage charm to your living room. Even a single lace panel at the window will work wonders. Not only will it make a room much more charming and homey, it also is great to diffuse light and provide privacy as well. Lace fabrics can be found online, at craft shops, and vintage markets.

When designing a vintage inspired living room, the furniture is everything. This all depends on the type of vintage style you are hopig to achieve. If you want a classic french style, choose french-style tables. These tables can be left mahogany or they can be painted white. A french table painted white instantly adds a touch of feminity and glamour to a lifeless room. If you are hoping to have a vintage living room similar to one in the 1950′s or 1960′s, a vintage coffee table is the best option. For couches and chairs, choose ornate, beautiful pieces that will really make a room stand out. To find these pieces of furniture, shop at your local thrift store, antique shop, or vintage market.

With such ornate furniture, you do not want your beautiful vintage inspired living room to be overwhelming to look at. When you are designing the walls and floors in your living room, keep in mind that it is best to keep them simple and soft. Too many nick knacks and ornate furniture will leave a room feeling too cluttered when it is not paired with plain walls and floors. If you do want to decorate one wall, you could do that. Your living room could have just one wall that is covered with beautiful vintage style wall paper.

During the Great Depression and World War II, times were hard. Most women did not have plenty of spare money to spend on decorating their homes. Instead, they were self-sufficent and decorated their homes by making many things themselves. You can easily purchase vintage fabrics at your local craft store to convert into your very own, homemade vintage couch cushions. No one will ever have to know you made them yourself!

Finally, you can complete your beautiful, vintage inspired living room by adding vintage style accessories. Think of vintage suit cases, clocks, figurines, lamps, old phones, and more. Maybe you or a close relative already have these accessories hiding in your attic. If not, they should not be too difficult to find at your local antique shop or vintage market.
